One thing that unites all South Africans is our shared passion for meat on the fire! Braais or shisa nyama, however you say it, the popular and proudly South African way of communal dining represents food, fun and friends. And this year in Durban, and a first for South Africa too, the new Shisa Nyama festival launches on Heritage Day weekend. I love this initiative, because in addition to it, it forms a platform to announce the first Shisa Nyama award winners. Various township dining spots were investigated and the finalists that will be grilling up the goods at the festival will be: Eyadini Lounge, Max’s Lifestyle, Café Skyzer, One and Only, Sbu’s Lounge and Tate’s Kasi Grill. Spiced brisket, t-bone and chicken wings will be cooked up along with traditional side dishes like chakalaka, pap and ujeqe. Bringing eKasi cooking to the crowds. Nomnom. Suffice it to say, this is not a vegetarian-friendly celebration 😉
There will be 350 tables to sit down and dine at. Food will be accompanied by a stage of popular local acts such as Veranda Panda and various DJs. A fashion and craft market will also be there.
