I heart market

I hit up this awesome, quirky little market on Saturday, along with what felt like most of Durban and half of the rest of South Africa. The tents and stands were heaving with people. I, in my grace and poise, tripped into tent poles, bumped into people, knocked merchandise over and basically made a nuisance of myself underfoot. That’s how I roll. With a crash.

Like with most things I attend or participate in, I was there for the food. And I wasn’t disappointed. I noshed on polish dumplings (pierogi), decadent flat bread that was groaning under the weight of its deliciouis toppings, cured meats and cupcakes. I think next time I’ll get there much earlier as I missed out on sampling Afro’s Chick’n, various breakfast options and I’m sure, with the tightly packed crowd, I missed some delectable gems that deserve guest-of-honour residence in my belly.

What I love about markets like this is seeing what an incredible variety of food we have, made right on our doorstep. The buttery cured salami-type of sausage (I ate it before I had a chance to remember its name) that I purchased from the local Creative Meats team easily rivaled any Italian import and is made and smoked on their premises, just up the road from the market.

I recommend alternating afternoon and morning visits to the I heart market, to enjoy the breakfast bounty one month and the phenomenal lunchtime eats the next. And, of course, there’s the talented craft in between. If it were up to me (and not the limited real estate in my stomach) I’d arrive in the morning and eat my way through to lunch.
